Bowel Issues

Constipation

Difficulty with bowel movements, straining, incomplete emptying, or chronic constipation may be related to pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, which can be effectively addressed through pelvic floor physical therapy. The pelvic floor muscles are not solely responsible for controlling urinary symptoms, but they also play an important role in bowel movements. Our treatment for often these symptoms often includes pelvic floor muscle assessment, breathing techniques, toileting strategies, and coordination exercises to improve bowel function.

Fecal Incontinence

Fecal incontinence is the accidental leakage of stool or difficulty controlling bowel movements. While it can feel embarrassing to talk about, it is more common than many people realize—and help is available. Pelvic floor physical therapy can help address the strength, coordination, sensation, and relaxation of the muscles involved in bowel control. Your physical therapist will take the time to understand your symptoms and identify contributing factors to create an individualized treatment plan aimed at improving bowel control and confidence in daily life.
